Addressing the special interests of students in the Human Rights Program, the course offers comparative insights into systems of rights protection in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and South Africa. Mechanisms of rights protection are discussed in their historical context, in light of traditions and experiences of constitution making. The scope of rights protection in these jurisdictions is discussed alongside procedural issues (judicial review, standing, admissibility).
Assessment is based on class participation, oral and written assignments, and a written in-class final exam.
